There’s a lot of hype around kinesiology tape and we at tummytape are all for it. Just like any new product, it's perfectly natural to wonder if it’s safe for you and your baby. We’ll let you know whether kinesiology tape is a must-have pregnancy item or something you should avoid.
What is kinesiology tape?
Kinesiology tape is an elastic strip made with pure cotton and a gentle adhesive. It’s used most commonly for sports injuries, but it’s also very effective against pregnancy aches and pains. Kinesiology tape works by gently lifting the skin. This increases blood flow while also providing support to tired muscles and relieving pressure from sensitive areas. Is kinesiology tape safe?
The simple answer is yes! Kinesiology tape is widely trusted by sports trainers and physical therapists. It’s noninvasive and gentle on most people’s skin with proper application. Kinesiology taping has little to no side effects. It’s the perfect choice for most moms experiencing pregnancy discomfort.
I have a medical condition. Can I still use kinesiology tape?
In general, yes. There are a few exceptions.
- People with allergies to adhesive should not use standard kinesiology tape. Fortunately, tummytape offers a sensitive skin friendly option made with a water-based adhesive. Find out about our Soft Touch Blush pregnancy tape now.
- People with a history of heart failure. For most moms, an increase in the flow of blood and fluids is a good thing, but it can be a risk to people who have experienced heart failure.
- People with active cancer. While it’s uncommon for a pregnancy to occur when someone has active cancer, for the few it affects kinesiology tape should be avoided.
I’ve used kinesiology tape and it irritated my skin. Why would this happen?
When applied properly, kinesiology tape only causes irritation to people with sensitive skin or allergies to adhesive. For kinesiology tape to work and be comfortable, proper application is essential. To learn how to properly apply our kinesiology tape, watch our how-to videos.
